Can I choose which day of the week will be my Sabbath?
You might have heard people say, “My Sabbath is Sunday,” or “My Sabbath is Friday.” The problem with this type of statement is that it alludes to a myth that God left this open for our choosing.
Nowhere in Scripture does God give man permission to transfer the solemnity of the Sabbath from one day to another. First, God’s Sabbath is not ours, but His. The Bible makes it clear that the Sabbath is the “Sabbath of the Lord” (Exodus 20:11; Ezekiel 20:12, 20; Isaiah 58:13–14; Mark 2:27–28). Only God has the power and authority to declare when the Sabbath is to be observed, because He created it (Genesis 2:1–3).
Also, the Bible never refers to “a” seventh day, or “a” Sabbath day in reference to the weekly Sabbath. The Bible uses the definite article “the” when referring to the seventh-day, weekly Sabbath. There is a huge difference! If we tell someone to go grab us “a” pen, then they can choose any pen they like. However, if we ask them to go get “the” pen, then that denotes specificity.
God was specific when He said, “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy” (Exodus 20:8). There is only one Sabbath day, and that day is the Lord’s to determine.
The best we can do is follow the example of Jesus. The Bible tells us that it was His custom to go into the synagogue and worship on “the Sabbath day” (Luke 4:16). Jesus, of all people, should know what day the Sabbath is! After all, He created it (Ephesians 3:9; Genesis 2:1–3; Mark 2:27–28).
The Bible makes it clear that the Sabbath is “the” seventh day, not “a” seventh day; and the seventh day is Saturday. Therefore, to be biblically correct, we should honor the Lord by resting and conducting corporate worship on Saturday—the seventh day of the week.
